Mega Millions is a multi-state US$1 lottery game in the United States. Twelve U.S. states currently license Mega Millions as a provider of multistate lotteries in those states (some states also license Powerball, Mega Millions' main competitor).
Jackpots are payable in 26 annual payments or a reduced lump sum cash payout, which varies from state to state. Jackpots starts at $12 millions.
Started in 1996 as The Big Game, the name was officially changed to Mega Millions on May 15, 2002. Also the "Big Money Ball" changed its name to the "Mega Ball". Initially tickets were on sale only in the states of Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia.
Drawings are held weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays since February 10, 1998 at around 11:00 PM Eastern time.

The odds presented here are based on a $1 play. In California all prizes are pari-mutuel, meaning payouts are based on sales and the number of winners. An optional multiplier feature for non-jackpot winnings is available only in Texas.
On May 9, 2000, The Big Game offered a jackpot worth $363 million. The prize was won by two ticket holders from different states. This was the largest under its old name and was once the world's largest. This was later surpassed on February 18, 2006 by a $365 million jackpot from Powerball, another interstate lottery.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot was $390 million, setting at the time a new, all-time highest jackpot record, won on March 6, 2007 by two ticket holders. The largest jackpot won by a single ticket had an annuitized value of US$315 million, won on November 15, 2005.
